UK Pension Advice for Expats in Switzerland
Independent, fee-transparent advice on UK pensions for British and European expats and Swiss nationals living in Switzerland.
Moving to Switzerland rarely means your UK pension follows you neatly. Providers often refuse to deal with an overseas address, the tax treatment changes the moment you become Swiss tax resident, and your UK pot now sits alongside pillar 2 and pillar 3a savings that work on completely different rules.
We advise on all of it together, from Switzerland, in plain English — so you can see what you actually have, what it will pay you, and where it is taxed.
What changes when you become Swiss tax resident
Your UK pension rights themselves do not disappear when you leave the UK. What changes is where the income is taxable, which paperwork needs to be in place before the first payment, and how easily your provider will keep servicing you.
- The UK–Switzerland double taxation agreement determines which country taxes your pension income — this needs to be claimed, not assumed.
- Without the right treaty paperwork in place, UK income can be taxed at source and again in Switzerland, and reclaiming it is slow.
- Some UK providers will not accept instructions from a non-UK address, or will not pay into a Swiss bank account.
- Your UK State Pension entitlement continues, and voluntary National Insurance contributions may still be possible while you are abroad.
Your realistic options
There are usually three routes: leave the pension exactly where it is, consolidate into a UK arrangement built for non-residents, or transfer overseas. Since the 2024 removal of the EEA exemption, an overseas transfer can trigger a 25% Overseas Transfer Charge, so the third route needs a genuinely strong reason.
- Leave it in place — no cost, but you keep any legacy charges, limited fund choice and servicing problems.
- Consolidate into an international SIPP — designed for non-UK residents, with an overseas address and adviser permitted, and a single view of your pots.
- Transfer to a QROPS — occasionally right, frequently expensive, and now potentially subject to a 25% charge. A Swiss occupational scheme is not a QROPS, so a direct transfer into pillar 2 is not available.
UK pensions alongside pillar 2 and pillar 3a
Most of our Swiss-resident clients are building three things at once: a UK pot from earlier career years, a Swiss pillar 2 occupational entitlement, and pillar 3a savings. Reviewed separately, they tend to duplicate risk and leave the retirement income sequence to chance.
We model them as one plan — what draws first, what stays invested, and which currency each liability lands in — so decisions about withdrawal timing and currency exposure are deliberate rather than accidental.
How we work
We start with a free 30-minute meeting to understand your position, then produce a written review of what you hold, what it costs and what it is likely to deliver. If a change is not in your interest, we will tell you so.
Common questions
Can I transfer a UK pension into a Swiss pension?
No — Swiss occupational schemes do not have QROPS status, so a direct transfer of a UK pension into pillar 2 or pillar 3a is not possible. The practical choice is between leaving the UK pension where it is and consolidating it within the UK system.
Where is my UK pension income taxed if I live in Switzerland?
It depends on the type of pension and the terms of the UK–Switzerland double taxation agreement. Getting the treaty paperwork right before income starts is what prevents being taxed twice and having to reclaim from HMRC.
My UK provider says it can't help me now I live abroad. What can I do?
This is common. You can usually move to a provider or international SIPP set up for non-UK residents without leaving the UK pension system, so you keep the UK tax treatment and avoid any overseas transfer charge.
